Liz McConaghy, from a small town in County Down, spent a total of seventeen years flying with the RAF’s Chinook Fleet. Aged just 21, she was the youngest aircrew member to deploy to Iraq and was also the only female crewman’ on the Chinook wing for four years. Liz became the longest serving female chinook crew member and during her career deployed to Afghanistan ten times. Stuart Hale is a former sniper who lost his leg during a mine strike incident in Kajaki, Helmand Province on the 6th September 2006 – the “Day of Days”, during which several others were wounded and one solider was killed – Mark Wright, posthumously awarded the George Cross. In 2008, Stuart became the first amputee to return to the front line in Afghanistan.

Kim Hughes, GC is a British Army bomb disposal expert and Warrant Officer Class 1 who was awarded the George Cross as a staff sergeant for gallant acts carried out in the Afghanistan conflict. Hughes made safe 119 improvised explosive devices during one of his tours in Afghanistan.

While serving with the Canadian Army, Mitic lost both of his legs in a landmine incident while fighting in the War in Afghanistan in 2007. He served as an Ottawa City Councillor, representing Innes Ward in Ottawa’s east end, from 2014 until 2018.
